INGENIEUR
PRESIDENT ’ S MESSAGE
Engineering Fraternity
The Board of Engineers Malaysia ( BEM ) will be celebrating its 50 th anniversary in August 2022 . Since its inception in 1972 , the Registration of Engineers Act ( REA ) had gone through several amendments introducing new entities such as Accredited Checkers , Engineering Consultancy Practice and Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate . Taking cognisance of the global trend of providing integrated engineering services , the REA was amended again in 2015 to make provisions for the registration of Engineering Technologist and Inspector of Works . I am pleased to announce the latest figure of the registration of Engineering Technologists and Inspectors of Works had crossed the 11,900 and 8,247 mark respectively as of June 1 , 2022 . The year 2021 marked the first entry of certificate holders of Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia and Marine Certificate of Competency into BEM ’ s register as registered persons .
BEM has been emphasising the high standing and professionalism of the engineering fraternity under its watch with public interest in mind . The BEM ’ s Strategic Plan formulated in 2021 had put in place various measures and initiatives to enhance the image of the engineering profession and its leadership role in industry . With the increasing load of the engineering fraternity to administer , the Strategic Plan is timely to steer BEM to the next lap of its journey .
As part of the BEM 50 th Anniversary programme , BEM will be publishing the 50 th Anniversary Commemorative book as well as the Who ’ s Who in Engineering , Malaysia book on engineering personalities to make the engineering profession more visible and valued by industry and the public in general .
The often-asked question on the difference between engineer and engineering technologist is well explained in the article ‘ Engineering Technology : where do we go from here ’. Engineering Technologists work with technicians , engineers and scientists to form technological teams to produce ever-increasing technological advancement . Each has specific role which is equally important to achieve any organisation ’ s engineering feat .
With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused by the on-going war in Eastern Europe , the decade ahead will pose more challenges for industry players and the engineering fraternity in general . However , crisis also provides opportunities for those who think laterally . I hope the engineering fraternity will take on these challenges and strive to achieve their respective goals .
Datuk Ir . Haji Mohamad Zulkefly bin Sulaiman President , BEM
