standardised labelling of things , colour coding , notices or special markings . Figure 2 shows the Stabilise Step Guidelines .
Step 3 – Shine ( Seiso ) Purpose . Cleaning is a way to cultivate commitment and responsibility for all aspects of things used and ensure they are maintained in tip top condition . Cleaning also helps to eliminate safety hazards . The shine step is considered the core essence of the 5S movement . Method . Cleaning must be done in a systematic way as described in the following :
1 . Identify the things or areas which need to be cleaned .
2 . Establish cleaning procedures - right cleaning method , cleaning frequency , type of personal protective equipment or PPE used and cleaning tools including detergents .
3 . Improvement circle . Once basic cleaning activities are in order , users are encouraged to contribute improvement ideas such as ways to eliminate the source of contaminants and detect potential problems .
4 . Motivation . Identify the best worker or team that cleans any parts , equipment or area so that a token of appreciation or incentive can be awarded to him / them . This is a way to encourage and motivate users to continuously engage in cleaning . Figure 3 illustrates the Shine Step Guidelines .
Step 4 - Standardisation ( Seiketsu ) Purpose . To regulate the earlier three S steps – sort , stabilise and shine activities and ensure workers consistently execute them effectively . Method . To apply visual control to trigger awareness and understanding of users . It actually goes back to human behaviour that seeing is believing , seeing triggers actions and seeing generates compliance with rules . Based on this , the 5S movement visual controls are to create awareness and understanding and as such encourage internal voluntary action to implement guided activities ( sort , stabilize and shine ) and sustain the tip top condition of things ( tools , materials and machines ) and the workplace . Visual control is achieved by using visual aids .

Below are some effective visual aids ;
● Instruction notices to guide users in operating things or performing tasks ,
● Signage to alert dangers / hazards / safety precautions ,
● Labels containing important information such as names , application , specification .
● Indication of materials to describe type , category , application , specification , and
● Signage to name a place or location . Figure 4 displays the Standardisation Step
Guidelines .
