In addition , it reduces waste and site material , thus resulting in a safe working environment and higher quality control ( Kamaruddin , et al ., 2013 ). Realising the potential of digital transformation in construction especially using prefabrication components , a revolution is required to cope with current transformations . One of the pioneering digital IBS companies , Gamuda IBS , switched to digitalisation in 2016 by establishing their first digital IBS factory in Sepang , Selangor .
Gamuda IBS is well recognised in the country as the pioneer of end-to-end digital IBS . Its factory in Sepang , is the first digital IBS facility in the country . It leverages on the various advantages of digital design tools and robotic construction to offer flexibility in design , fast construction , and superior quality finishing . Gamuda IBS is on the right track to move the building industry into the next level , in parallel with the global trend for Industrial Revolution 4.0 .
Productivity of Digital IBS
CIDB Malaysia and CREAM had a front row seat to the impeccable home building by robotic arms in two Gamuda factories . To make the most of the opportunity , CIDB Malaysia and CREAM were given a chance to calculate and measure the productivity performances of their latest public housing developments : Rumah Selangorku ( RSKU ) Jade Hills , RSKU Kundang , and RSKU Cyber Valley .
Figure 6 tabulates the productivity performances of Gamuda ’ s three latest public housing developments . Both RSKU Kundang and RSKU Cyber Valley achieved grade A in productivity performances with 13 sq . ft ./ man-day and 11.6 sq . ft ./ man-day respectively . RSKU Jade Hills on the other hand only achieved productivity performance of 6.8 sq . ft ./ man-day . However , it is worth mentioning that productivity performance is always influenced by the complexity of a project .
Taking RSKU Jade Hills as an example , it consists of 714 units , which is more than that of RSKU Kundang and even though the number of units of RSKU Cyber Valley is more than that of RSKU Jade Hills , at 864 units , RSKU Jade Hills is clearly a more complex project as it has four different unit sizes : 700 sq . ft ., 750 sq . ft ., 900 sq . ft . and 1,000 sq . ft .
CIDB and CREAM have also conducted another case study of measuring productivity performance of building construction projects that used the conventional construction method . In the study , 28 building construction projects were chosen as sample population and their productivity performances were measured . It was found that the conventional construction method only managed to achieve grade C productivity performance at 5.27 sq . ft ./ man-day . These case studies show that on average , digital IBS has twice the productivity performance as compared with conventional construction method .
Conclusion
The construction industry will remain a cornerstone of the world ’ s economy and almost all other industries . However , the industry is still lagging behind other industries and its productivity has been static for decades . This inertia , however , can be disrupted by pushing the industry into modernisation by bringing digitalisation , innovation , and the accelerated adoption of innovative technologies into the industry .
