to the two surrounding rivers, afforded natural protection to the city without having to build external
security walls as practiced by most other ancient cities.

The ruins of Jiaohe provide an eye witness
account of the vicissitudes of history of the ancient
people of different nationalities in Xinjiang. They
hold great value for the study of Central Asia, the
Silk Road, ancient architecture, religions, and
ancient arts.
As one of the world’s best heritage sites of an
earth castle, it was included in the UNESCO World
Heritage List on June 22, 2014.
It is worth a visit for engineers or researchers
who are interested in understanding the durability
of earthen structures that have lasted more than
2,000 years.
