The Muar Bridge, constructed in 1965 and
completed in 1967, was built to replace the ferry
services plying between Muar town on one side
and Tanjung Agas on the opposite bank. The old
ferry services began operation in 1890 using the
landing facilities at Penambang Ferry Terminal.
To complete this bridge, four pontoons were
used to carry concrete mixers, cement, sand and
cranes weighing up to 120 tons with 50-ton lift in
which a total of two piers were built specifically to
fit the mould of concrete beams.
The bridge was built on 48 piles of special
steel imported from Germany and 82 reinforced
concrete piles. It is estimated that more than
9,000 m 3 of concrete, 2,100 tons of steel
and a workforce of 130 were used during the
construction of the bridge.
The Muar Bridge was officially opened by
Sultan Ismail of Johor on April 16, 1967 and was
officially named as the “Sultan Ismail Bridge”.
