INGENIEUR COVER FEATURE LONG-TERM SOLUTION – MORE THAN 100 YEARS CAPACITY BTSL has a total capacity of 120 million tonnes, and is capable of managing the entire 5,000 tonnes of daily domestic wastes produced from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for over 50 years based on a 2% annual waste increment. If it only manages Kuala Lumpur’s 2,500 tonnes of daily domestic waste, BTSL has enough capacity to last over 100 years based on the same annual waste growth rate. IDEAL CHARACTERISTICS BTSL has ideal characteristics. One key feature is its location away from an urban environment, in the middle of an oil palm estate, far from established townships and housing developments. Located 50 km from Kuala Lumpur city centre, BTSL is accessible from the North-South Expressway via a purpose-built interchange providing direct access to the facility. A large buffer zone ensures developments are at least 500m away from the landfill. BTSL is the first and only landfill in Malaysia to provide a fullfledged buffer zone. COST-EFFECTIVE, FULLY ENGINEERED INSTALLATION Landfill Design BTSL is an excellent example of an engineered sanitary landfill that is capable of providing a safe, cost-effective and proven method of solid waste management for the country. It is designed as a Level IV engineered sanitary landfill, the highest standards according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The landfill will be developed in 17 phases over 700 acres of land dedicated for the project over the concession period and beyond. The base of the landfill cell is fully lined with a composite liner system, including a thick layer of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) to ensure optimal impermeability. An effective and efficient leachate (wastewater) collection system at the base of the landfill ensures effective drainage 6 16 VOL – DECEMBER 2015 VOL64 55OCTOBER JUNE 2013
