Vision-Based Intelligent Traffic Monitoring System :

A Game-Changer for Urban Mobility

By Ir . Dr Mohd Zamri bin Ibrahim Dr Md Rizal bin Othman Dr Ahmad Afif bin Mohd Faudzi Universiti Malaysia Pahang

In Malaysia , the surge in the number of vehicles on the road results in the growing problem of traffic congestion . Manual traffic control by traffic officers during peak hours has proven inefficient due to human reaction time limitations and difficulties in coordinating traffic flow across multiple intersections . Moreover , the predefined set time for the traffic light signal fails to resolve the issue of traffic congestion under varying traffic densities .

The Malaysia Smart City Framework , launched in 2019 , aimed to address this problem by introducing smart traffic management systems . By applying 21 st century intelligence to the transportation system , the Government hoped to achieve multiple goals , such as safety , law enforcement , efficiency , city planning , energy conservation , and carbon emission reduction .
At Universiti Malaysia Pahang ( UMP ), we developed an intelligent traffic monitoring system called the Vision-Based Intelligent Traffic Monitoring System ( VBITMS ), as shown in Figure 1 , that utilises state-of-the-art vision-based vehicle detection and type classification to provide fully classified road usage data in real-time . Vision sensor was the ideal technology because it allowed for rich classification possibilities that were unavailable through other methods , such as induction loops or magnetometers . For instance , vision technology could count pedestrians and classify different types of vehicles . This
