Taxi stands and green minibus stands are only provided if relocation is not practical . There is no restriction to vehicular access . However , vehicles are slowed down through the use of traffic calming measures , such as speed tables , kerb build-outs , sharpened corners , road narrowing and gateways .
Factors considered in developing a Pedestrian Scheme
The factors that the Hong Kong Transport Department considers when planning and developing a pedestrian scheme are : - a . Pedestrian capacity and safety of existing footways . b . Public demand and land use , e . g ., are there shops or places of interest which would attract pedestrians flow ? c . Impact of pedestrianisation on the local traffic and the access and loading / unloading activities of the buildings in the vicinity .
Pedestrians coming out of MRT stations are comfortably connected to their workplaces and shopping complexes .
Pedestrian Connectivity in a Business District
As one steps out from MRT station , there is an almost seamless connection from the station to the offices or shopping complexes or city parks . There are numerous escalators within the shopping complexes or external escalators for vertical access to different levels to minimise crossing streets unless it is necessary , such as taking the trams or buses .
Other Country Experiences
Whilst pedestrianisation is desirable from pedestrian and environment standpoint , it is imperative that the design of any pedestrian scheme would not create serious traffic problems
Note the close intervals of connecting link bridges
