LAUSANNE
Conserving energy and providing public services more efficiently are the primary goals of Lausanne .
The Swiss city has proposed a visionary project called the 2000-Watt Society in response to two major challenges of sustainable energy resources and climate change . It is building two eco-neighbourhoods that are expected to house nearly 20,000 residents . Plaines-du-Loup in the north and Près-de-Vidy in the south of Lausanne with be certified as 2,000-Watt sites . These sites will adhere to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology announcement that 2,000 watts per person per hour is enough for everyone in the world to live a comfortable life . This calculation includes domestic energy usage but also factors in the energy a person might use outside the home by taking public transport as outlined below :
Helsinki aims to be carbon neutral by 2035 . It is a world leader in smart mobility and aims to reduce traffic emissions by 69 % from 2005 levels by 2035 ( Finland ’ s national goal is 50 %). Many emissionreducing measures have been implemented or planned : the city bus fleet will be electric , the Metro and charging network will be expanded , and new micro-mobility options like electric scooters and electric bikes will be provided .
The City ’ s energy company , Helen Oy , is working to reduce district heating emissions by 74 % by 2035 by utilising waste heat , implementing heat pumps , switching from fossil fuel to renewable electricity production and using electricity storage facilities . The goal is to stop using coal entirely by the 2030s .
One of its neighbourhoods , called Kalasatama , operates a smart grid using innovative solutions such as V2G ( vehicle-to-grid ) electric vehicle charging stations , which not only charge electric vehicles but also allow them to feed electricity to the grid to ease peak demand .
