INGENIEUR WELCOME REMARKS By Datuk Ir. Adanan Bin Mohamed Hussain, President, Board of Engineers Malaysia Datuk Ir. Adanan Bin Mohamed Hussain, President, Board of Engineers Malaysia welcoming delegates to the Meeting On behalf of the engineering fraternity in Malaysia, it is indeed a great pleasure for me to welcome you, all delegates and observers to the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Meeting 2016. The Board of Engineers Malaysia, in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, is indeed very honoured to be able to host this event, held here in Kuala Lumpur for the first time. I trust that all the arrangements our Secretariat made ensures that you will experience a smooth, enjoyable and fruitful gathering. For the benefit of our international gue s t s and delegates, allow me to introduce the role and function of The Board of Engineers Malaysia (or BEM). BEM was established in 1972 by the Malaysian Parliament, as a statutory body constituted under the 6 12 VOL VOL67 55JULY-SEPTEMBER JUNE 2013 2016 Registration of Engineers Act of 1967. Its primary role is to facilitate the registration of engineers and regulate the profes sional conduct and practice of registered engineers in order to safeguard the safety and interest of the public. In carrying out this primary role, BEM places the utmost importance on assuring the quality of engineering graduates and the c omp e tenc y of practicing engineers. At the professional level, BEM ensures that all registered professional engineers are sufficiently competent and always maintain a high standard of professional conduct. The recent amendments to the Registration of Engineers Act in 2015 requires all Professional Engineers to pass the Professional Competency Examination in order to entitle them to submit relevant documents, such as plans, drawings, engineering surveys, designs and feasibility studies, to any person or authorities. BEM will continuously strive to ensure that engineering services provided in the country are of high quality, delivered with due diligence, conforming to professional ethics and benchmarked to the best practices. This commitment is necessary for BEM to attain our vision to be a highly respected authoritative body that ensures public interest and safety in engineering work and services. Such commitment will also facilitate the safe and efficient movement of cross-border engineering activities; and this mobility is now legally allowed for by the new amendments to the Act, enforced since July 31, last year. As such, it is evident that the role and objectives of BEM are consistent with that of the IEA, as articulated by the tagline of the IEA - “Working Together to Advance Benchmarking and Mobility in the Engineering Profession”.
