Marang Bridge in Terengganu under construction , 1964
By Cheo Hong Keyong
The Marang Bridge was one of the bridges constructed in 1964 by the Public Works Department , or JKR , in Terengganu . This was to replace the ferries operated by them at the Kemaman , Dungun , Losong and Marang districts . The then Marang ferry used a motorised cable pontoon system ( see photo ). It was the only river crossing on Federal Route 3 running along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia .
Construction of the Marang Bridge by Messrs Building Construction Co ( M ) Ltd commenced in June 1963 . The bridge consists of five 78ft wide spans . It was officially opened by DYMM Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah of Terengganu on May 18 , 1965 .
JKR is now constructing a new bridge as the 60- year old Marang Bridge can no longer cater to the high traffic volume . The new bridge is expected to be completed by 2025 .
