Photo 8 : Private , defensible space outside one ’ s door building is sufficient to guarantee the occupant ’ s comfort but there is no one-size-fits-all solution . The features of passive ventilation and design are illustrated in Photos 1 to 8 . But in urban regions , its effectiveness has been reduced by blockages from adjacent buildings ( Cheung & Liu , 2011 ).
Sustainable housing needs to consider passive ventilation in its design . Here are some of the advantages of passive ventilation systems :
● Reduce ( or eliminate ) the cost of building , operating and maintaining the system .
● Lower energy consumption for buildings .
● Lower noise and increased occupant comfort with lack of fans .
● Increase design freedom and better use of space in the building .
However , the implementation of such a system has its drawbacks and challenges such as :
