Muzium Negara ( National Museum of Malaysia ) was built on the site of the former Selangor Museum , which was destroyed during World War II in 1945 .
The museum ’ s design , by architect Ho Kok Hoe , was chosen by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia , Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra . It was inspired by the architecture of Malay royal palaces and vernacular Malay architecture .
Muzium Negara was officially opened on August 31 , 1963 by Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni al- Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullal , the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong .
On April 4 , 1996 , the building was gazetted under the Antiquities Act 169 / 1976 as an ancient monument and historical site .
