Figure 1 : State-of-the-art pioneer cryogenic CO 2 separation technologies pilot testing facility , or commonly known as ‘ CO 2
Flow Loop ’
Figure 2 : Simplified process flow diagram for the CO 2 Flow Loop pilot testing facility is demonstrated as part of an integrated system with full interface and functional tests . The facility consists of compressors , buffer vessels , heating and cooling medium systems , CO 2 liquid pumps and cold boxes , thus enabling it to test a wide range of cryogenic CO 2 separation technologies .
One of the engineering marvels of this pilot facility is the cooling system which is designed to cool inlet gas from 90 ° C down to -60 ° C . This requires a complicated cooling system which includes air cooling , heat integration from a cold stream as well as a liquid cooling medium cooled down by a liquid nitrogen cooling system specially designed and implemented for the first time in Malaysia . Cooling CO 2 in such a manner is made more difficult by Malaysia ’ s climate . Another major feature of the facility is its robust ability to handle multi-phase CO 2 systems including CO 2 gas , solid and liquid , which is the first of its kind in the world . The testing performed at this facility enabled PETRONAS to greatly understand the thermodynamic behaviours of CO 2 at different
