followed , for example ; traditional methods were not followed , wrong materials were used and wrong type of connections installed and no guidelines were avaiable . This happened to Rumah Tukang Kahar , where the house was not reassembled to its original design due to poor dismantling processes leading to missing or degraded parts , sustained damage or even extensive destruction during the transfer process . Furthermore , the Tukang or carpenter may not have possessed the appropriate traditional skills required to reinstall the house . In addition an appropriate system of part identification and tagging was not applied . Again , in both cases , it was evident that no one with specific conservation knowledge was involved including the owners and contractors so they did not know how to carry out the work correctly . In order to carry out conservation works properly there need to be clear guidleines when relocating traditional timber houses .
Currently , there are no regulations concerning protection of the historic environment and certainly no specific guidelines concerning the maintainence of historic timber buildings specifically in Negeri Sembilan . The Negeri Sembilan state Government should consider creating its own provisions . In addition , the National Heritage Act 2005 does not have any specific provisions covering traditional timber houses . This study has shown how things can happen in terms of changes in form , fabric and function during relocation involving the dismantling and reassembly process . It also demonstrates what we need to learn about the process , so that other people when carrying out repairs might also learn from the study in the context of relocation , for example ; sense of place , responsibility and involvement of the house owner . But none of the processes noted in the two studies were similar because they were not carried out properly by the contractor or the owner . The contractor involved should be registered under Construction Industry Development Board ( CIDB ) Malaysia with a BO3 license . Owners should also know their role in preserving the character of their house . The limited references about the relocation of traditional timber houses and the lack of knowledge about heritage were obstacles for contractors and owners in conserving the houses .
Above all , realisation of what they have to conserve might drive owners , contractors and local authorities to utilise authorised processes in an intelligent way which will help the people of Negeri Sembilan protect their heritage . The nation will benefit , especially future generations as these Traditional Malay Houses are part of the country ’ s distinctive material culture .
