● Malaysia ’ s population grew from 28.3 million in 2010 to 31.7 million in 2016 and is estimated to reach 41.5 million by 2040 .
● Malaysians will make an estimated 131 million daily trips in 2030 , a significant increase from the 40 million trips in 2010 .
● The population aged 65 years and above is expected to be 7 % in 2020 and will increase to 9 % by 2030 .
TREND 2 . Increasing urbanisation
● Urbanisation grew rapidly from 51 % in 1985 to 71 % in 2010 and is projected to reach 80 % in 2030 .
● Migration to cities is driven largely by job opportunities and increased standard of living .
TREND 3 . Advances in real time information and digitisation
● Through smart phones , travellers will have access to more travel options and real-time status of all modes of transport .
● Shared-mobility services will become more common with the proliferation of car sharing and e-hailing platforms .
TREND 4 . Expansion of e-commerce market
● The e-commerce contribution to GDP was recorded at RM49 billion in 2012 and increased to RM68 billion in 2015 .
● The trend is expected to continue , almost doubling in 2020 with RM114 billion and expected to hit RM170 billion .
● A study in 2016 suggests that Malaysia is at an inflection point of e-commerce growth with a projected annual growth rate of 11 %.
TREND 5 . Shift towards environmentally sustainable transport
● Demand for green supply chain will become prominent as environmental aspects gain importance in the transportation sector .
TREND 6 . Move towards bigger vessels , consolidation and containerisation
● Ship capacities have steadily increased to almost eight fold over the last 40 years and containerisation more than doubled since 2000 .
