The management and operation of PTP was privatised from the very beginning with a concession period expiring in 2055 . Since its establishment , PTP has created more than 20,000 jobs and contributed RM15 billion in economic spinoffs , further underlining the importance of ports like PTP to the national economy .
Today PTP is a full-fledged container transhipment port with a total of 14 linear berths running over 5km . It is also Malaysia ’ s premier transhipment hub and serves more than 30 international shipping lines operating 90 weekly services connecting over 300 ports globally . An overview of PTP ’ s footprint is provided in Figure 5 .
PTP is well-equipped to accommodate the latest generation container vessels . Figure 6 provides a glimpse of PTP ’ s wharfside operations and Table 2 summarises its port facilities and container handling equipment .
PTP is a compulsory pilotage port and marine services are provided by nine tugboats , three pilot boats and 45 certified pilots . Marine operations and port navigational safety are assisted by a Vessel Traffic Management Information System ( VTMIS ) that is operated by Johor Port Authority and PTP Sdn Bhd together on a 24-hour basis .
