adopting new SBSR technologies ’. Currently , most of the vessel designs used for new builds in Malaysia are imported from other countries . This seriously impedes the development of technology locally and sidelines research and activities from the global mainstream technology and knowledge development .
Anchoring this technological capability is the ability to develop a product . This must be the fundamental target : the ability to design a specific ship for a particular purpose . Design capability must be acquired by doing . Only then the ability to create , evolve and innovate a myriad series of ship designs can be realised . The ability to build them would be an advantage and supporting this through developing local equipment would almost definitely create a sustainable marine industry .
Currently the designs are being monopolised by big international corporations that have garnered tremendous knowledge and have finetuned practices over years of development . Competing with these giants seems a gargantuan effort . The designs they bring into the country capture a huge amount of monetary benefits , depriving the local industry . The designs brought in usually package together a whole series of associated foreign equipment and technical services and , more detrimentally , the mental dependence and the waiving of the national drive to creativity and innovativeness .
