Developing and Sustaining the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Industry : A Conundrum

Maritime transport constitutes 85 % of the

global transportation sector . It is evidently a major transportation means for the servicing of world trade . The increasing importance of maritime transport is clearly distinguished by the need to fulfill the basic requirements for the distribution of resources . Maritime transport , world economics and the distribution of resources intertwine together in a tight formation . With the projected world population of approximately nine billion in 2050 , maritime transport is set to play a much more significant role , coupled with the various challenges that will arise . The following challenges will elevate maritime transport into a sector of tremendous innovation in order to realise the shifting of roles and purposes :
● supporting economic growth , feeding an extra two billion people , managing natural resources sustainably , finding renewable sources of energy ;
