Maritime Industry

The pivotal role of the maritime industry to Malaysia is not an understatement in view of Malaysia ’ s geographical strategic position along the maritime route between East and West Asia . It is thus not surprising that Malaysia sits for the 8 th consecutive term at the International Maritime Organisation . Malaysia is also blessed with 4,675km of coast line leading to the establishment of several major international ports contributing a significant portion of the nation ’ s GDP .
In this context , the engineering fraternity ’ s contribution to Malaysia ’ s maritime economy should be well recognised whether it is for port construction and operation , the shipbuilding industry , coastal protection , sea floor dredging and ocean sustainable development works . In the midst of this hive of engineering activities , I would urge our engineers and related technical personnel to take cognisance of the importance of sustainable development goals as expounded by the United Nations . Malaysia is also a signatory to the Sustainable Development Strategy for Seas of East Asia ( SDS-SEA ) that provides a platform for co-operation among the 12-member nations of East Asia .
The need to stay ahead of the curve for port management and operation with technology is
well described in the article on Port Operation Management , with a case study on the Port of Tanjung Pelepas , Johor . It is also worthwhile to look into the economic potential on shipbuilding and ship repair as detailed in the Malaysia Shipbuilding / Ship Repair Industry Master Plan 2020 . The article on ‘ Developing and Sustaining Technology in the Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Industry ’ further illustrates the seven key strategies and 40 recommended actions in this direction .
The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the economy locally and globally . The maritime industry is not spared either , due to its close link to trade-related activities , tourism and supply chains . An article from the Maritime Institute of Malaysia ’ s online platform has suggested diversified supply chains , logistics-centric ports , a comprehensive bunkering strategy and strict compliance to IMO ’ s conventions .
While it is difficult at this juncture to predict when the Covid-19 pandemic will subside , I do hope all readers will stay safe and healthy .
