Namibian Inflation basket redefined

THE Namibian StatisticianGeneral took the stage this
week to announce a number of
changes to the way this country
thinks about inflation and the
ever-increasing cost of living
in Namibia as a whole, and the
capital in particular.
John Steytler announced a
reconstitution of the basket of
goods considered when establishing the Namibian Consumer Price
Index (NCPI), dropping some surprising items such as goat meat,
due to limited availability, and
peas. More logical items dropped
include typewriters and still film
cameras. Among the new items
added to the basket are sportswear,
boys and girls outfits, garden and
