6| INFORMANTÉ 14 November - 20 November 2013 Swartbooi wants development for the South SEVERAL big projects are underway in the //Kharas Region in which the Office of the Governor plays a prominent role. The construction of the multi-billion Namibia Dollar Neckartal Dam outside Keetmanshoop started with some earth works and Salini SpA, the Italian contractor, has already opened its office at the southern town. The company also met with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry to set up a working programme, which, according to governor Bernardus Swartbooi, would give a good indication of how many people will be employed at the different stages of the construction of the dam. “The ministry has already started with the recruitment process and we have assisted them in this regard.” Another major project that got off the ground is the Lüderitz Waterfront, now entering its second phase, to be completed during the second half of next year. An amount of N$230 million has been made available to demolish the old power station, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. “The main steel structures and the beams of the building will remain and the concrete foundations will then be laid, after which they would start with the interior work at the building,” said Swartbooi. Bernadus Swartbooi Governor of //Kharas Currently about 50 people are employed at this project and, it is estimated that 130 workers would be employed at the peak of the project. A crucial project that needs to be completed to give an economic injection to the //Kharas Region, is the Aus-Lüderitz railway line. “Much progress has been made with this project, and the expectation is that it will be completed during the third quarter of next year. They are already preparing for the railway line in Lüderitz town where it would be the responsibility of NamPort.” Some small-scale agro-processing projects for Bethanie, Berseba, Gainachas, and Blou-Wes are also in the pipeline, and, according to Swartbooi, some progress has already be made at Bethanie. Construction on Neckartal Dam outside Keetmanshoop “We have already bought 200 goats for Bethanie and some of them are distributed to poor families for breeding purposes, while we also continue with our own breeding plan. The Village Council made some town land available for this project, and a borehole was drilled to provide water for the livestock, as well as to water gardens that we want to set up,” Swartbooi explained. In this regard, the governor pointed out that the plan is to set up some sort of food bank. Land would be allocated to people to plant vegetables and fruit for own consumption, but some would also produced to be sold so that other Namibians could buy their vegetables and fruit from this food bank.
