Swartbooi wants development for the South
SEVERAL big projects are underway in the //Kharas Region
in which the Office of the Governor plays a prominent role.
The construction of the multi-billion Namibia Dollar Neckartal
Dam outside Keetmanshoop started with some earth works
and Salini SpA, the Italian contractor, has already opened its
office at the southern town.
The company also met with the Ministry of Agriculture,
Water and Forestry to set up a working programme,
which, according to governor Bernardus Swartbooi,
would give a good indication of how many people will
be employed at the different stages of the construction
of the dam.
“The ministry has already started with the recruitment
process and we have assisted them in this regard.”
Another major project that got off the ground is the Lüderitz
Waterfront, now entering its second phase, to be completed
during the second half of next year.
An
amount
of N$230
million has been made
available to demolish
the old power station,
scheduled to be
completed by the end of
this year.
“The main steel structures and the
beams of the building will remain and
the concrete foundations will then be laid,
after which they would start with the interior
work at the building,” said Swartbooi.

Currently about 50 people are employed at
this project and, it is estimated that 130 workers would be employed at the peak
of the project.
A crucial project that needs to be completed to give an economic injection to the
//Kharas Region, is the Aus-Lüderitz railway line.
“Much progress has been made with this project, and the expectation is that it will
be completed during the third quarter of next year. They are already preparing for
the railway line in Lüderitz town where it would be the responsibility of NamPort.”
Some small-scale agro-processing projects for Bethanie, Berseba, Gainachas, and
Blou-Wes are also in the pipeline, and, according to Swartbooi, some progress has
already be made at Bethanie.

“We have already bought 200 goats for Bethanie
and some of them are distributed to poor families
for breeding purposes, while we also continue
with our own breeding plan. The Village Council
made some town land available for this project,
and a borehole was drilled to provide water for
the livestock, as well as to water gardens that we
want to set up,” Swartbooi explained.
In this regard, the governor pointed out that
the plan is to set up some sort of food bank. Land
would be allocated to people to plant vegetables
and fruit for own consumption, but some would
also produced to be sold so that other Namibians
could buy their vegetables and fruit from this food bank.
