Smurfit Kappa announces USD33 million investment in Fortaleza , Brazil

Investment will expand capacity and innovation capability at its production site in Ceará
Smurfit Kappa , one of the leading providers of paperbased packaging solutions in the world , has announced an investment of over USD33 million in Brazil to expand the capacity of its plant in Fortaleza to meet the growing demand for innovative and sustainable packaging .
The expansion , which includes the installation of a new corrugator , will significantly extend the plant ’ s Shelf Ready Packaging capability for FMCG customers in a range of sectors including fresh fruit , home appliances and pharmaceuticals .
Several high-end printers will also be installed to provide the high level of precision and quality that is required for eCommerce packaging . In addition , a new innovation centre will foster even more customer collaboration and enhance the development of impactful , sustainable and market-leading packaging solutions .

Smurfit Kappa has launched the new sustainable packaging portfolio for flowers and potted plants . The line , designed to meet e-commerce , retail and even export specifications , consists of solutions made entirely from cardboard , a 100 % recyclable and biodegradable material .
With the resumption of festivities in Brazil , the flower sector expects a 12 % growth in sales volume in 2022 , according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Floriculture . To meet the demand , Smurfit Kappa solutions were developed for producers and retailers who want to provide security and efficiency in the supply chain , as well as providing a positive unboxing experience to the end consumer .
The packaging of the flower portfolio has tailor-made designs to suit the customization needs of each client , especially on commemorative occasions when the sector is in high demand , such as Valentine ' s Day . Packaging can be customized through internal and external prints with varied messages , including handling instructions and information about the product or brands .
