The design of futures is a collaborative exercise that encourages imagination and helps to open new perspectives on the problems to be solved .
Futures design and its related applications have gained importance in recent decades as the globalized world has become extremely complex . Future thinkers of the early 1970s , such as Alvin Toffler , Alain Touraine , and Daniel Bell , are credited with the organized and systematized beginning of this way of thinking . At that time , scientists and futurologists were challenged to imagine what the world would look like in the next century .
Over the following decades , together with the evolution of design itself and design thinking , a series of methodologies was established to design and plan scenarios based on design concepts . Today we have news that several companies focused on innovation , such as Google , 3M , Siemens , Marcopolo , Fundação Telefônica Vivo , Bradesco and Natura , have spaces , centers , laboratories , hubs or future experiments to explore the field of design of futures .
Finally , the design of futures is nothing more than using creativity , empathy , collaboration and experimentation to design scenarios in which opportunities can arise for new products and services that are economically viable , socially relevant and ecologically responsible . The future as a design object is a place where we will intentionally transform reality .
