OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU
Dear Music Industry,
Guardian Jobs
Where are all the great new songs and artists? Why does everything sound the same? Why did
they stop The Old Grey Whistle Test? Bob Harris is still alive, isn’t he?

I am admittedly the typical, grumpy 57 year old who started buying music when The Beatles slid
into Led Zeppelin, convinced himself that anything ‘not made in the 70s’ was rubbish until Jeff
Buckley came along and still harks on about those magical years when a new album from Pink
Floyd was a major artistic event and not just a 79p download. It was the music, the lyrics, the
album cover and the sleeve notes all adding to the mystery and excitement of a new LP and then
the 4 hour concert at Earls Court.

I guess we have rose-coloured spectacles when it comes to our youth. I know my University was
the best, that football was more skillful, not all huff and puff, that there were better sit-coms on
the tele.....and in my day, blah blah blah... yawn. I think the frustration was driven by a Saturday
night watching x-talent or something on the tv and thinking is the only music we have now?
Karaoke songs produced by Simon Cowell and some artist called Piff Mummy doing some Hip
Hop by sampling a great riff from 40 years ago and kidding us that he’s written a brilliant song.
CREATIVE RECRUITMENT

Technology development has taken away much of the magic, the mystery and the expectation.
Yes, it’s given us the ability to listen to any album or song at the touch of a button, and your whole
record collection is with you 24/7. You don’t have to buy bad albums anymore in fact you don’t
have to buy anything, just stream the thing for pennies. There are no crackles or the annoying
need to turn the vinyl over at halfway, new releases can be accessed literally track by track. BUT,
it’s taken away the magic. We don’t listen to an LP as a complete piece of music anymore, so
who cares about the track order? Album covers and sleeve notes are lost in a digital booklet that
no-one reads, and just about anyone with a computer can make a record so quality control has
deteriorated
MUSIC WEEK

There is great new, original talent out there, but it is hard to find and you have to search it out. I just
wish the mainstream media would give it some more airtime, and not just the small independent
radio stations or more obscure music magazines. We need far more serious music programmes.
Less property shows would help - I don’t want to re-build a monastery in Shropshire, also less
cooking from some new pouting chef, and less match of the day 1, 2 and 3. Jools Holland tries
his best, but we need much more new original music from new talent on the main TV channels.
A show dedicated to new music every week on the BBC? That would do it. New Artists, Original
Songs, Intelligent comment, and Live Performances.
