However, when we did, he couldn’t have been keener to tell us all about his live show, and how he prepares for them. ‘I try to make it as interesting as I can, as I use the same sounds from the studio recordings on stage. I try and play as many of the sounds as possible live, by triggering samples on MIDI controllers’. Wally then goes on to tell us all about the samplers he uses on stage, such as an Akai, a Roland, and a Nord amongst many more. ‘The thing with electronic music is, you still need to keep your audience interested and entertained, which is why the visual is so important. By triggering the samples ourselves using various MIDI controllers, there is more of a sense of the music being played live, and you get a connection with the audience’. We get the feeling that Wally could probably talk about the electronics involved in his music for hours, and so we move on to the other visuals involved in his stunning live setup. ‘I use the projected videos, which are mostly made by myself or very talented illustrators that I know, because they complement the music and add another dimension to the show. The audience are less likely to get bored visually, because the graphics are always running, along with the physical performance myself and the band try to keep going throughout’. As Wally’s talking, we can see people creeping up behind who have been waiting their turn, and so we wrap up the conversion, however not before we have asked Wally’s advice to other Artists. ‘Once you’ve figured out your sound, for live shows it’s all about the visuals and how to keep your audiences attention. It’s easier if you are in a live instrument band, however if you rely solely on samples, its important to trigger those samples live to keep the energy going, and to add another visual aspect such as projections’. 21-22 Special feature - Artist management 23 Internships and Jobs for you 24 Imploding - Public rants 9-10 Gotye and me at the Hammersmith Apollo Gotye performing Live Written by Rachel Wilkinson MAY 2 0 1 4 1 M AY 2 0 1 4 2
