GOAL SETTING GOAL SETTING Start Setting Realistic Goals Kris Kaplan Kris Kaplan is an Author, Speaker, Coach, Entrepreneur, 5x Ironman and father of two amazing kids. He knows about getting the right things done and has a passion for helping others have breakthroughs in business and life. High energy, straight shooting and right to the point is what you can count on, GiddyUp. THE VISION WAS A LIFE FILLED WITH VITALITY IN ENDLESS AMOUNTS. I WOULD FEEL BETTER ABOUT MYSELF, LOOK BETTER TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, BE A BETTER DAD, BE A BETTER HUSBAND… IN In early 2009 I decided that I would get healthy and started competing in triathlons. I weighed over 240 lbs. I couldn’t swim more than 250 yards (5 laps) in the pool, and running more than ½ a mile seemed right next to impossible. I didn’t even own a bike for the road. My children were 2 and 4 at the time and all I really wanted to do was get in shape so I could keep up with them. How great would it be if I could keep up with the almost endless amount of energy these two kids had? I had to say no to things that I really wanted to say yes to because I just didn’t have it in me. They deserved better than that. The vision I had was a life filled with vitality in endless abundance. I would feel better about myself, look better to the outside world, be a better dad, be a better husband, and so much more. This was the dream or the vision that I had. So how do you go from being a sloth to a 5 time Ironman? Well, funny enough, it’s a very similar journey no matter what the destination and regardless of the goal. It works in both business and life and it has 3 Simple Steps. 1. Get a clear and compelling Vision: A vision of where you want to be. My good friend Cameron Herold calls it Vivid Vision and it’s often been referred to as Painted Picture. You visualize the Goal as if it has already happened. What does your Company/ Life look like, feel like, sound like, act like, and taste like? Get a crystal clear picture in your mind and write it down so you can share with your team and those around you. Tie in a strong emotional feeling or core purpose to this goal and your chances of success increase 12 billion percent (not real data). 2. Eliminate limiting beliefs: While there are a number of predictable things that can, and will, get in the way of making things happen, there is another group that we have SPRING 2016 complete control of, should we choose to. We have beliefs about the world and our place in it. If you change this story, you open up a world of possibilities. There are three things we can do to help crush these limiting beliefs. The first is our physical state. If you want to feel more in control, stand up straight, put your chin up, roll your shoulders back, and stand proud. Second is to change the story we have been telling ourselves. It’s amazing what the mind will believe even in the absence of any real and consistent proof. Don’t be a victim. Take control and stop blaming everything that happens (or doesn’t happen) to you on external forces. Lastly, we can change our strategy. Practicing the same skills over and over again that only produce mediocre results and expecting different results based on how hard we work is just plain nuts. Everybody does it, but that doesn’t make it right. Hire a coach, find a mentor, search out the best in a field, and do what they do. Why reinvent the wheel? I wanted to be an Ironman, so I hired Simon Lessing of boulder coaching. Simon is 6X world champion and at the time, had the most winnings as a triathlete. 3. Execute with a plan: If you fail to plan, then plan to fail. At K2 Coaching, I teach clients to break their quarterly priorities down to daily measureable items. We track and measure in www.aligntoday.com. If you have not heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals, please Google it. This proactive plan will not always work 100%, but it’s a good place to come back to when you get knocked off track. Remember, however, that those life issues were predictable. Did you have a plan for them? GiddyUp and make it happen. Celebrate the journey. 9
