The Western Solar Shift
Seven reasons Alberta and Saskatchewan rooftop solar is shifting to the mainstream and why it makes more sense now than ever before for homeowners.
For most of the past two decades, rooftop solar in Alberta was something you’ d only see on an off-grid acreage or a neighbour’ s house who really likes to crunch numbers. That has changed, and fast. More families in Alberta and Saskatchewan are going solar every year, the payback period has dropped to around a decade, and the kitchen table conversation has shifted from whether it makes sense, to when to get it done. The reasons are practical, financial, and increasingly defensive. Here are the seven reasons that matter most to homeowners.

Rising and volatile electricity bills
This is the number one reason Albertans are going solar. Electricity prices here are unpredictable, and Albertans saw the deregulated market push rates to a record 37.46 ¢ per kilowatt-hour in December 2022, and then prices stayed high throughout 2023. The new Rate of Last Resort, the default electricity rate for residential, farm, and small business consumers who do not select a competitive contract, sits near 12 ¢ until the end of 2026 and then can rise by up to 10 % at its next reset. Even with lower regulated rates in the short term, delivery and transmission fees climb almost every year. Every kilowatthour your panels produce is one you don’ t pay for on your next bill.

In Alberta, if your panels produce more electricity than you’ re using at that moment, the surplus flows back to the grid and you get a credit on your bill. It’ s called net metering, and it works like a seasonal savings account, you accumulate bill credits all summer and then draw them down in the shorter, darker days of December and January, making the grid effectively a free seasonal battery. Saskatchewan homeowners have access to the same kind of program through SaskPower.
2Western Canada has the sun for it
This surprises most people. Alberta ranks second in Canada for solar energy potential, behind only Saskatchewan. The average Alberta system produces about 1,276 kilowatt-hours of electricity per kilowatt of panels installed each year. Calgary alone logs 333 days of measurable sunshine annually, more than any other major Canadian city. The prairie sky is genuinely one of the best places in the country to run solar.
Energy independence and outage resilience
Not long ago, worrying about the grid going down was considered an overreaction. Not anymore. Alberta had six critical level Energy Emergency Alerts in 2024 alone, and rolling blackouts hit in both January and April of that same year. A solar system paired with a battery backup gives a home something to fall back on when the grid stutters. More and more Albertans are treating that as a basic home insurance necessity and not a luxury upgrade.
