Indoor fire Prevention Tips
Indoor fires are very common. Two of every five home fires start in the kitchen with unattended cooking being a factor in one-third of home cooking related fires. Heating equipment such as space heaters or wood stoves are often the second leading cause of home fires, fire deaths and fire injuries. Electrical fires and candles are also causes for indoor fires. Here are some tips to prevent indoor fires:
When an adult is cooking in the kitchen, make sure they never leave the stove unattended.
Never leave flammable items such as clothes or bedding near lit candles.
Always remind the adult in the room to turn off any space heaters or portable air conditioners.
Don’ t plug too many items into an extension cord. Never play with a lighter or matches. Never leave a burning fire in your fireplace unattended.
Outdoor fire Prevention Tips
Natural disasters, wildfires and flammable debris are just a few ways fires can start outside your home. In the event of a natural disaster, any gas leaks may cause a fire. Wildfires should be taken into consideration for those residing in heavily forested areas. To prevent a fire starting outdoors, it is important to take the following precautions:
Make sure your home is equipped with gutter guards. Without gutter guards, flammable debris can build up and pile on your roof leaving your home at risk for a fire. Ask an adult whether or not your home has gutter guards.
Be aware of any broken gas lines or vehicles with gas leaks. Never leave an outdoor fire burning unattended.
