Vera Kochubey:

Visual Artist, Writer, Interpreneur

ib: What is art for you and how do you live or do art in your life?

Helena Bonham Carter says : “I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.” There is nothing I could add to that.

ib: What does it mean to be an artist?

Being an artist is not only knowing how to create a product of visual culture, but also knowing how to deliver that product to the audience and to make that product matter.

ib: Do you think there is such a thing as independent art ?

I think nothing is independent. An artist serves society. Society reacts, and you will always be dependent on what people think of your work. If people want to buy your work, it means it’s good. If not – try something else. Everything is simple.

ib: What is fashion to you?

I have always been inspired by beautiful clothes. I see some pieces of clothes as pieces of art, and I use clothes sometimes in my paintings, too.

Also, I truly hope the era of consuming will end soon and we will become more conscious, thinking less of what to wear and more of what to do.

ib: Do you have any idols?

I truly respect and adore women who effortlessly stand out: Bjork, Tilda Swinton, Helena Bonham Carter, Kate Moss, Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic…

ib: What is NAME: Berlin?

It’s a creative space on Torstrasse 62 where i collect and sell vintage clothes that I like, designer clothes and accesories that inspire me and also quality basic garments for everyday life. It’s also an art studio and a gallery of my works.
