we need the occasional
drop of blood
to remind us
of our humanity
we need the tang
of adversity
to spur our striving
how much more dearly
we prize those things
for which we’ve had
to struggle to obtain
how much more carefully
we guard them
knowing that so much
of oneself was invested
in the obtaining
