Tina and Eric Jacobsen, of Hillsboro’s Jacobsen’s Books & More, were awarded the Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA) first annual “Bookseller of the Year” award.
The award recognizes independent booksellers’ contributions to, and support of, independent authors.
NIWA members nominated the Jacobsens in part because of the special section of the store they’ve dedicated to local sellers, the numerous events and signings they organize and their willingness to include a wide selection of authors, according to Tonya Macalino of the NIWA.
“Booksellers are our biggest supporters and can be our biggest downfall aside from our readers,” Macalino said. “It’s huge. They don’t have to sell our stuff.”
Jacobsen’s has a record of promoting local independent authors and New York Times bestseller list authors equally.
“That’s something to appreciate,” Macalino said.
“I think it’s really important to support other local people,” said Tina Jacobsen, who said she considers independent authors as essentially small business owners somewhat like herself. “And I think we have the next big author here in Hillsboro. I don’t know who it is yet, but I am confident.”
To celebrate Jacobsen’s contribution, the NIWA is planning a cash mob for Saturday, May 24. Stop by between 4 and 6 p.m. to support the business.
“It’s important for me to give back to the community and bring awareness to authors,” Jacobsen said. “We have so many writers; we need more readers.”
