Life and Poetry
I was sitting in my cubicle one day and I stumbled across Suli Breaks ‘I Will Not Let Exam Results Decide My Fate’ I instantly fell in love with everything that is spoken word and performance poetry. I committed the rest of the day to writing my first official piece; I have not stopped since.
Poetry for me is a form of healing. I write all my pieces firstly for myself, it is never intended to be shared with people. I write what I am experiencing or going through at that particular time. When a poem or a performance helps me deal with whatever emotion arises I feel obligated to share it in the hope it may help shed some light for another individual with a similar problem.
Inspiration
I am inspired by anything and everything. I have pieces ranging from social media to love to how Miley Cyrus is a product of her environment.
Development
My usual writing style includes me just scribbling for hours. I’ll write all my thoughts down on a particular subject and once I feel I have something worthy Ill then start to play with what goes where and where I can make it rhyme, for me my work has to rhyme in some way or another it’s just my conditioning around poetry.
Performance
My first performance ever was an experience I’ll never forget. Standing in front of a willing and eager audience and allowing myself to be truly vulnerable is a rush. Removing your mask so to speak and allowing people to see your true nature is one of the most liberating and addictive experiences.
I have been performing for 7 months now and in this time I have learnt so much. Having placed 6th at my first ever performance to then go home, work hard and come back and win in the same playing ground was one of my highlights so far.
Favourites
I don’t have a favourite, I am inspired by small things in a lot of performers. Some include; Tonya Ingram, Buddy Wakefield, Deigh Poetic (Cape Town based), Phil Kaye.
