Celebrating 200 years of literacy instruction by Hoosier teachers! What an exciting time in the state of Indiana as we celebrate our bicentennial and the fantastic work teachers do to promote literacy in classrooms every day! The Indiana State Reading Association fall conference, Bicentennial Bash: Celebrating Hoosier Teachers! will certainly be inspiring with keynote speaker Ron Clark. There are also many fantastic conference sessions for you to attend as we celebrate the Love • Joy • Passion of reading!

We hope you will enjoy the fall 2016 Indiana Reading Journal as we present best literacy practices. Enjoy and be inspired by the poem by Jamie Reese "Open Letter to Students" as well as Dr. Joy Dewing's article "Let's Go Fly a Kite: STEM, Literacy & Dragons in a Secondary English Classroom”. In her Tech Tips column, Tara Kingsley explores a comprehensive reading platform to enrich digital texts geared for grades four and beyond. The 2016 Indiana science trade book annual reading list (IN-STAR) details new trade books to enhance the Indiana science curriculum, K-5. Explore the many trade book selections presented by Jeff Thomas, Joyce Gulley, Kristin Rearden, and Amy Broemmel. Don't miss the Partners in Literacy (PiL) column by Peggy Rice where she provides advice on selecting culturally diverse literature for children. The article also provides information about book awards and lists noted authors and illustrators. Finally, take a look at Lyndsi Smith's book reviews for some great books for teachers!

Please remember that YOU can write for the Indiana Reading Journal. Guidelines for submission of articles can be found here.
