Are you an Amazing Writing Teacher?

Presenter: Shannon Anderson

I don't know about you, but when I went through school as a kid, I don't remember my teachers talking about the components of good writing or how to write for different genres. I was never taught about sentence fluency or the importance of using strong verbs. I remember being asked to write a certain length paper and to have complete sentences.

I also did not have any training in college in any of my education courses to prepare me to teach writing. I had a methods of teaching math class, methods of teaching literature, methods of teaching math class, methods of teaching literature, methods ofteaching science, even methods of teaching music and art, but no methods of teaching writing class. That just seems crazy to me!

Somehow, I made it through school and college and still have a passion for writing and have successfully published many children's picture books and some articles in magazines. I also have taken many creative writing classes and have gone to countless writing conferences and workshops to hone my skills to both write and teach writing to others. Writing block is one of my favorite times of the school day and I hold writing camps for kids every summer.

As a board member of the Indiana State Reading Association, I have presented, "Be an Amazing Writing Teacher" at the ISRA annual conference for many years. I hope you find my session helpful if you attend. You can visit my website for more information about me or to ask questions. See you at the conference!
