9 The index was constructed by taking into account four questions asked during the survey: a.
campaigned in elections; b. distributed pamphlets; c. took part in protest/demonstration; and
d. donated or collected money. In each question, the response options offered to the respondent
were “Yes” and “No.” The scores of all questions were summed up. The summed scores of
all questions ranged from 0 to 4. These scores were then distributed across two newly created
categories that indicate the degree of political participation. A score of 0 was categorized as
“no participation” and a score of 1 to 4 was categorized as “participation.”
