CAPSICUM Capsicum minimum Roxb., Capsicum frutescens, L.( L. Y. Sklyarsky, Lekarstevennye Rastenia, Moscow, 1968)
Medicinal Part: The fruit. Bodily Influence: Stimulant, Tonic, Carminative, Diaphoretic, Rubefacient, Condiment. Uses: The all-supporting, stimulating effect of Capsicum is the infallible action of internal success. Capsicum taken with Burdock, Golden seal, Ginger, Slippery elm, etc., will soon diffuse itself throughout the whole system, equalizing the circulation in all diseases that depend upon an increase of blood, and unlike most of the stimulants of allopathy, it is not narcotic.
It acts mainly upon the circulation, giving immediate action to the heart and then extending to the capillaries, giving tone to the circulation without increased pulsation, but giving equalized power to it. Remember that it is an agent that is seldom used alone, as by itself the power is soon extinguished. Cayenne has many unwanted accomplishments to its credit. Indigestion, dyspepsia, atonic gout, alcoholism, delirium tremens, intermittents, flatulence, colic, low fever, diphtheria, haemorrhoids; it is useful in cramps, pains in the stomach and bowels, causing peristaltic action of the parts previously contracted. Bleeding of the lungs is easily checked by the use of Cayenne and the vapour bath. By this means circulation is promoted in every part of the body and consequently the pressure upon the lungs is diminished, thus affording an opportunity for a coagulum to form around the ruptured vessel.
Capsicum is not a cure-all and we do not recommend its continual use beyond the obtainable results. Externally: As a liniment for sprains, bruises, rheumatism and neuralgia:
Tincture of Capsicum, 2 fl. oz. Fluid extract of Lobelia, 2 fl. oz. Oil of Wormwood, 1 fl. dram Oil of Rosemary, 1 fl. dram Oil of Spearmint, 1 fl. dram
