BEARBERRY Arctostaphylos uva ursi, Spreng.( Kotukov, Lekarstevennye Rastenia, Kiev)
When used in the treatment of diabetes Vaccinum myrtillus( Blueberry) should be combined with it. Tincture of Blueberry leaves( Vaccinum myrtillus) 20 – 40 drops. Tincture of Bearberry( Arctostaphylos) 10 – 20 drops in water three or more times a day. Homoeopathic Clinical: Cystitis, Dysuria, Haematuria, Urinary affections. Russian Experience: The pharmacopoeia uses Uva ursi( Bearberry) extracts or combined with other Herbals as antiseptics, or in diuretic conditions. Folk Medicine: The tea of Uva ursi is used especially for female complaints, kidney and bladder disorders. Veterinary: Successfully useful as indicated above.
BEAR’ S FOOT Polymnia uvedalia, L.
Common Names: Leafcup, Balsam Resin, Yellow Leafcup, Uvedalia. Features: Bear’ s foot, a member of the astor family, is a large perenial 3 – 6 ft. high. Native of North America from New York to Michigan; south to Florida, Texas and Canada in ravines, and edges of the woods.
The leaves are the size of a man’ s hand, but shaped like a bear’ s foot. The root is like that of a small sweet potato, with a much darker skin. Medicinal Part: The root. Solvent: Water. Bodily Influence: Stimulant, Anodyne, Laxative, Alterative. Uses: Bear’ s foot is called the mammitis( inflammation of the breast) remedy. The affect on nonmalignant indurated swellings such as mammitis and enlarged( engorged) cervical nodules will respond by breaking up accumulations when other medication fails.
Given internally for enlarged spleen and has considerable value in certain malarial conditions. It is used as an alterative in scrofula and a good remedy in old chronic cases of rheumatism. Dose: 1 teaspoonful of the granulated root to 1 cup of boiling water. Drink 1 cup during the day, a large mouthful at a time. Of the tincture of Uvedalia alone, 10 – 25 drops three or more times a day. Dosage and frequency depends on condition for which it is prescribed. Externally: The root is boiled in coconut oil, or an agent of salve consistency, and applied to swollen areas, two or three times a day, followed by a flannel cloth and water bottle held in position for better absorption of medication. The ointment is also used for scalp massage, as a hair tonic.
