Features: Barley, a cereal of the genus Hordeum. There are several species of barley. The two cultivated are H. vulgare, or six-rowed barley. H. distichun, the so-called two-rowed barley. Others are herbs, slightly similar to barley in general appearance.
Barley seeds have been found in tombs in Asia Minor dating from about 3500 B. C. In the United States, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and California are the major producing states. In Canada, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba.
The vegetative parts of the barley plant are similar to those of wheat and oats, being distinguished by the auricle at the base of the leaf which clasps about the stem, extending farther than in other cereals with pointed projections which overlap at the side opposite the leaf. Each barley seed is enclosed in a strong hull which remains intact even during threshing. The naked barley seed within this hull is similar in shape to a kernel of wheat. Solvent: Water.
