Amaranthus hypochondriacus( N. O.: Americanceae)
Common Names: Pile Wort, Prince’ s Feather, Red Cock’ s Comb, Love-Lies-Bleeding, Velvet Flower. Features: Amaranthus; the typical genus of herbaceous plants of about sixty species of apetalous plants.
The name is from the Greek, meaning“ unfading”. In some species the flowers preserve their appearance after they are plucked and dried. Because of this poets have made the plant an emblem of immortality.
Chiefly the plant inhabits the tropical countries, and is remarkable for the white or reddish scales of which their flowers are composed. Common garden, ornamental varieties include Love-liesbleeding, Prince’ s feather, Cocks comb. The medical properties are of more value in its wild state. They continue in flower from August to the time of Jack Frost. Medicinal Parts: Flowers and leaves. Solvent: Water. Bodily Influence: Astringent. Uses: Agreeably recognized for menorrhagia( abnormally excessive menstruation), diarrhoea, dysentery, haemorrhage from the bowels.
