This, the author’ s second book, shows progress in research since his first book in 1966. In all works on Herbalogy the general idea is to encourage people to grow, collect and experiment with what nature has provided. Not just new plants of the area, but introductions from other countries. Keen interest is shown in the North American Indian inheritance of Folk Medicine. Many researchers and writers are very persistent about new facts, and wish to check on their own findings. Those in command of the Russian Ukrainian languages will be rewarded greatly if they follow the progress and experience of the Ukrainian and Russian scientists in this field.

In our book we made comparisons between Indian Folk Medicine and herbal practice and those of Russia and India. When the above book arrived we were pleased to find that it followed a similar pattern to our own study. The writer, Dr. Nina Georgievna Kovaleva, had the patience and devotion to analyse and classify 300 works on Austrian, Chechoslovakian, French, German, Indian, Italian, Polish and Russian literature. For instance, we learned for the first time that our common Plantain is used in Bulgaria to treat cancer of the spleen, and that in China they use Burdock to dissolve mercury in the blood. Dr. Kovaleva writes about the plants prescribed in her practice. This assurance enables her to speak with authority. The book is intended for use by doctors, researchers, students, botanists, agronomists, and pharmacologists.

The last four editions, from 1960 – 4, introduce many new medical preparations. A most informative book, especially for herbalists, who will find the latest research achievements help prove the theory of the importance of herbs in medicine. The book is highly technical but useful for herbalists and students requiring up-to-date information. Many familiar North American plants take on a new aspect in medical use, something yet to be found in Anglo-American publications. Bibliography is convenient for students, as medicine is itemized separately. A total of 396 monographs dating from 1960 – 4 indicate how dynamic medical literature is abroad.
