A compact, very informative book on medical botanics, generally original, with historical facts of interest. Latest botanical, medical, agronomical and economical value of herbs. Many artistic half-tone illustrations and drawings.
Latin and Russian index of 500 plants; bibliography of 240 works of monographic character and books considered valuable enough to be approved by the Academy. Of 240 editions, eighteen are dated from 1781 to 1920, an average of one book every ten years over a span of 140 years. The Russian Revolution and Civil War ended about 1920. Since that time, Herbalogy and Folk Medicine has had specialized attention, which reflects in literature also. In forty-five years there were 222 books, dating from 1920 – 65, an average of five contributions every year. The Academy has accepted 183 formulae and valuable recipes, with North American plants used and recommended in many cases. Formulae and directions for growing, preparing and collecting are given with a calendar and map of plant geography. These are also available in drug stores( Apteki). Preparations are listed as follows: heart 9; stomach 38; kidney and bladder 23; cancer 4; liver 12, and so on.
We are unable to name another Anglo-American book adequate to the above reviewed, where a scientific institute will uphold the findings of their academic authority. With their consent and our grateful thanks to the Academy of Bello-Russ., our book is only the smallest sample of the useful information and illustrations that can be found in their“ Wild Medical Plants”.

The Russian Government encourages herbal medication, with Central Pharmacological Committees and the Ministry of Health revising and approving herbal formulae for general use by either drug dispensers( Apteki) or laymen. In this book, seventy-three formulae are selected for use as tea treatments for stomach, heart, nervousness, etc. Many combinations are indicated for more than one specific illness. All Russian literature in this field emphasizes the specific and combined malfunctions of heart, lungs, nerves, stomach and cancer, indicating how people can help themselves with the use of herbs for treating the above-mentioned drastic sicknesses of mankind. A classified index on herbal properties is given to enable the reader to combine teas and decoctions himself. Bibliography is of forty-five works, a few from 1912 – 37 and the remainder
