Russian Experience: Two species of Eucalyptus are cultivated for medical and decorative purposes, known by the same name, pronounced in their own way, Eucalyptus globulus, Labill and Eucalyptus cinera. Dr. Ramel introduced Eucalyptus to Europe in 1856 and Southern France soon followed with cultivation of this medical tree. Dr. Muller has written a valuable monography about Australian Eucalyptus which has stimulated interest in this valuable plant. About eighty years ago Russia started to cultivate Eucalyptus for decorative reasons; later its interest was of a deeper meaning. Today the Black Sea area has active plantations. About 15,000 – 18,000 seedlings are obtained from 1 kg. of seeds, which are then transplanted. The young trees yield leaves for oil extract, or are cut and used as a tea. Uses: The tea, decoctions, oil or Nastoika with Russian vodka is on hand for all conditions of respiratory malfunctions: colds, bronchitis, chest tightness, catarrh, etc. Externally: Skin conditions of carbuncles, boils, wounds, ulcers.
EVENING PRIMROSE Oenothera biennis, L.( N. O.: Onagraceae)
Common Names: Tree Primrose, Sun Drop. Features: The English name for the species of the genus Primula; also applied to a number of other unrelated flowering plants as evening primrose( Oenothera biennis). This is not to be confused with the Butter rose( Primula veris). Evening primrose can be found in the United States. The 500 species of Primula are mostly perennial herbs, spring flowering, native in the north temperate zone, especially at high altitudes. Only six or eight are known from North America. The leaves all grow from a short underground stem; the flowers are borne usually in umbels on a leafless stem. The petals form a tube which flares at its summit. They are of many colours, from white to purple. Medicinal Parts: Leaves, bark. Solvent: Water. Bodily Influence: Astringent, Nervine, Sedative. Uses: To quiet nervous sensibility, this agent acts on the alimentary toxins due to combined faulty diet, and nervous tensions of long standing which create toxic waste, causing depression of the solar plexus and the central nervous system.
Evening primrose stimulates the vital actions of the stomach, which has a direct association on the liver and spleen. Rendering renewed success in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders such as neuralgia, affection of the lungs, dyspepsia, hepatic torpor, heart, spasmodic asthma, cough of a nervous or spasmodic character, whooping cough, fullness of the bowels, and in female disorders associated with pelvic fullness. Dose: From ½ – 1 teaspoonful of the fluid extract every 4 – 6 hr., or more frequently as required. Dose of tincture of Evening primrose alone: 5 – 40 drops according to symptoms. Especially favourable combined with 15 – 30 drops of Cone flower( Echinacea angustifolia). Homoeopathic Clinical: Tincture of fresh plants-Cholera infantum, Diarrhoea, Hydrocephaloid.
