World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war. It is generally considered to have lasted from 1939 to 1945. MAHATMA GANDHI India's figurehead in one of his letter’s to hiltler requested, to prevent the war which may reduce humanity to the savage state. He said,” We have found in non violence a force which, if organised, can without doubt match itself against a combination of all the most violent forces in the world.” And so constantly appealed to Hiltler in the name of humanity to stop the war but stil the war began. British India (today known as India,Pakistan,Bangladesh) officially declared a war on Nasi Germany in September 1939.The British Raj sent over two million volunteer soldiers to fight against Axis Powers. Indians fought with distinction throughout the world; in the European theaters of Germany and Italy, in the deserts against Rommel and in the Asian region defending India against the Japanese, and liberating British colonies such as Singapore and Hong Kong when the Japanese surrendered in August . The Muslim League supported the British war while The Indian National Congress, demanded independence before it would help Britain. London refused, and so when Congress announced a "Quit India" campaign in August 1942, its leaders were imprisoned by the British. Apart from this, Indian participation in the Allied campaign remained strong. The financial, industrial and military assistance of India formed a crucial component of the British campaign against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The Indian Army during World War II was one of the largest Allied forces and after the end of the World War, India emerged as the world's fourth largest industrial power and its increased political, economic and military influence paved the way for its independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.
