Recent research supports the long-held notion that proximity to urban parks — and the flora , fauna and natural sounds within — improves the physical and mental health of nearby residents . City parks encourage active lifestyles , reducing health costs and making cities more resilient by helping to clean the air and improve public health .
As a neighborhood butting up against industrial development and active waterfronts , BVHP communities have fought long and hard for environmental justice , remediation and reclamation of space for positive environmental change . Fighting to shutter the PG & E Hunters Point power plant is just one example of efforts and environmental justice work undertaken by this community .
The restoration and expansion of the Park continues the legacy of that robust , resident-led advocacy . Through a collaborative design process , the India Basin Waterfront Park project will act as a catalyst to promote physical , social , mental and emotional health and well-being for the entire neighborhood .
