ARTS , CULTURE , AND IDENTITY
STRATEGY 1 : ENSURE PARK PROGRAMMING IS EQUITABLE AND RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNITY NEEDS AND DESIRES
Ensure that programming at the India Basin Waterfront Park includes input from residents , local organizations and artists from the BVHP neighborhood . ( See Workforce Development section for potential hiring and leadership opportunities for local artists , musicians and related cultural arts programs ). Make sure that programming remains affordable and accessible to all visitors , but especially to area residents .
INITIATIVES:
• Form an “ India Basin Programming Committee ,” composed of a diverse group of neighborhood park users , to plan and maintain a calendar of events at the Parks , inviting and encouraging BVHP-based organizations to use the park spaces and amenities to increase their program capacity
• Cultivate a robust array of performing arts , history and culture programming , emphasizing local partnerships and building upon existing events . Examples :
• Annual , on-site festivals that build upon existing cultural calendars and emphasize the cultural traditions of BVHP ’ s Black , Asian , Latino , Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander , Ohlone and other communities to encourage cross-cultural education and honor the diversity of the community
• Storytelling events to record an oral history of the neighborhood
• Events that celebrate the site ’ s rich maritime history
• Shrimp boil to celebrate the historic Chinese shrimping industry
• Support mobile art and showcases in the neighborhood , encouraging community art from youth and young adult residents ( See Area of Focus 5 , Youth Opportunities for potential leadership and engagement opportunities in the arts .)
• Instruction in fishing , dance , yoga and meditation , spoken word , storytelling , Zumba , meditation , environmental education , water safety , boating and swimming lessons , as well as organized walking clubs
• Create an Artist-in-Residence program to showcase work on a rotating basis
