AREA OF FOCUS # 1

ARTS , CULTURE & IDENTITY

A historically Black neighborhood since the 1950s , BVHP is rich with the culture of many ethnicities and racial minorities 1 , as seen in the work of a diverse community of artists , creators and storytellers . In 2018 , the San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared the BVHP neighborhood the African American Arts and Culture District to advance , cultivate , enrich and advocate for African-American equity , cultural stability , vibrancy and economic vitality in the district .
The Equitable Development Plan seeks to create a park that reflects the history of India Basin and diverse generations of BVHP residents whose stories have been obscured . The design of public spaces within the Park , therefore should highlight and celebrate past , present and future of BVHP residents , from their perspectives . Park planners drafted the following strategies to further the goal of properly representing those who have lived in BVHP and helped shape what it is today .
