Metro trains: Train surfing coupler riding in Melbourne
METRO Trains says 138 people diced with death last year by riding on the outside of trains.
A group of thrillseeking teenagers calling themselves the Sky High Idiots drew public ire last year after posting a series of videos online of people“ coupler riding”— hanging off moving trains— in Melbourne.
Figures obtained from Metro Trains reveal 780 people have been spotted coupler riding since late 2009 when it took over the franchise.
There have been another 51 reports of people“ train surfing” on roofs.
Last year there were 130 instances of coupler riding— two fewer than the record of 132 incidents in 2011— and eight episodes of train surfing.
Metro spokeswoman Sammie Black said train surfing and coupler riding were extremely dangerous practices.

The cousin of the Year 7 Sirius College student, Layla Alsaabary, spoke to 9NEWS this morning of her disbelief over the death of her cousin, who she said was like a sister.

" No one can believe it, we hear about these things, the victims of terrorist attacks, she was just going to buy ice cream.”
Executive principal of Sirius College Halid Serdar Takimoglu said the school community was shocked by the death of the“ energetic” girl.
“ This is devastating and shocking for Zynab’ s family, her class mates and her teachers. All of us are deeply distressed that one of our smiling students has been taken in a cruel act of violence,” he said.
Mr Takimoglu said prayers were held for the young girl, and full-time counsellors would be made available. it is always very concerning to see people behaving so recklessly as they risk their lives or serious injury,” she said.

Adults caught clinging on to the outside of trains are fined $ 389, but minors only pay $ 78.
Since 2012, 358 adults and 188 children have been fined.

Among the recent fatalities was a 23-year-old Albert Park man who died after a train surfing accident at McKinnon in 2015. In 2014, Jordan Porter, a 26-year-old graffiti artist known as Sinch, was killed while train surfing at Balaclava. James Wilkinson, 18, died after being electrocuted while on top of a city-bound train in 2012.
Other videos of the attack posted on social media show wounded and bloodied people crying for help on the footpath outside the ice cream parlour.
