Historic Preservation
At Hotel del Coronado, we feel a great sense of stewardship and commitment to honor The
Del’s incredible history and legacy. The Master Plan preserves several original buildings, such
as the Power Plant, Laundry and Ice House, along with the 1887 Oxford Building, which was
relocated to the property in the 1980s. The Power Plant, (which once provided power for the
entire island of Coronado until 1922) will become a group meeting space and co-working
lounge, while the Ice House will serve as a History Gallery for guests to discover more about
The Del’s fascinating past, and as a meeting place for our Historic Tours. Its expansive terrace,
made from reclaimed bricks from the property, will host events as well.
THE DEL’S ICE HOUSE
Built in 1889, the Ice House was home
to the Coronado Ice Company, where
ice was manufactured and stored,
supplying coveted ice to the hotel
as well as the entire community. The
charming building is being restored
and transformed into a History Gallery
which will showcase both permanent
exhibits to take guests back in time and
rotating displays celebrating specific
themes like Holidays at The Del or Our
Cinematic History, as a way to share the
hotel’s unique legacy. The Ice House will
also serve as the meeting place for The
Del’s historic tours.
