“ The happiest I am is when I’ m travelling and exploring.”
Yet one of her most treasured travel memories was made much closer to home. Watching a herd of elephants gather around a watering hole near Angola remains one of the most emotional experiences of her life.
“ It brought me to tears,” she says.“ It was one of the most beautiful things I’ ve ever witnessed. Elephants do feel empathy. Scientists and wildlife experts agree that elephants show high levels of emotional intelligence, selfawareness, and compassion. They form tight-knit family bonds and regularly respond to the distress, pain, or joy of other elephants and even other species.”
Her appreciation for life’ s quieter moments continues once filming wraps. Kim enjoys woodworking, fixing furniture, tending her garden, and filling her home with flowers. She loves meeting new people and striking up conversations with strangers while travelling.
Her perfect weekend isn’ t only about red carpets or glamorous events. It begins with a workout, followed by a swim or cold plunge, then a wander through an outdoor market before she ends the day by cooking something delicious.
Her South African heritage is equally important to her.
“ Our superpower is our ability to have compassion for others,” she says.“ We always seem to find humour to help us through challenging times.”
“ It feels like a really meaningful and busy season creatively, and I can’ t wait for people to see both projects,” she says.
Away from the set, travel is one of the ways Kim refreshes her creativity and encounters new perspectives.
“ The happiest I am is when I’ m travelling and exploring,” she says.“ If I had to choose, I’ d pick wandering through a city over an island getaway every time.”
Some places have left a lasting imprint. Visiting Pompeii as a young traveller ignited a fascination with history that still endures today, while the mythology of ancient Egypt, with its stories of Ra, Osiris, Horus, and Set, continues to inspire her imagination.
That combination of warmth, resilience, and humour have shaped both the woman and the performer she has become, allowing her to connect with audiences from every corner of the world.
Looking back on the little girl whose acting journey started with a newspaper advertisement, Kim knows what she would tell her younger self.
“ Stay gentle and patient with yourself,” she says.“ And listen to your mother when she tells you not to over-pluck your eyebrows.”
As she balances international productions, theatre, and a career that continues to evolve, the advice seems fitting. Reinvention may require ambition, but it also requires knowing when to be gentle with yourself. IB
